Haliastur indus

Weight: 320 – 670g

Description: Distinctive and contrastingly coloured, these birds have chestnut plumage except for the white head and breast and black wing tips.

Found: Widespread throughout Pakistan, India, Nepal, Southeast Asia, and as far south as Australia. Brahminy Kites are primarily seen over plains, marshes, and wetlands.

Diet: Primarily a scavenger, feeding on dead fish and crabs – but will occasionally hunt live prey such as hares and bats.

Comments: They roost communally on large, isolated trees with as many as 600 having been seen in one location.
